05 Feb 2017

During our last trip through central Queensland we decided to visit Carnarvon Gorge in Carnarvon National Park - about 150 kilometres from Injune. The main walking track leads through the gorge with side tracks to points of interest. A toilet block is located at the Carnarvon Gorge Visitor Centre and also alongside the track just past the turn off to Moss garden. The walking trail map indicates these. We decided to do Moss Garden on the return journey.

Ampitheatre – a few steps then climb up a steel later to enter the small opening that leads into the natural amphitheatre.  Created by water washing away a boulder that has been dislodged from cliffs.  Very interesting

Wards Canyon was closed unfortunately as we have heard this is quite amazing.

Art Gallery – about 70 metres of various aboriginal art along a sandstone side of the cliff. This tells the story of aboriginals in the area for thousands of years. The outline of number of different sized hand prints sprayed onto the surface.

Moss Gardens is a beautiful spot created by water dripping continuously from the sandstone cliffs - believed to be coming through the rock for several thousand years.  Very peaceful and a bit cooler than surrounding area. Viewing platform built for visitors to sit and enjoy the vegetation (look out for orchids growing on the steep rock faces). Lots of steps and a climb into the area but there are several seats along the way to stop and rest.

The walk from the car along the tracks and return was about 16.3 kilometres according to our Garmin watch. Track goes up and down through bush land and crosses the creek several times so make sure you have good shoes and take plenty of water. Creek crossing over stepping stones and track is quite easy to follow.

The cars are parked at the Carnarvon Gorge Visitor Centre which has a topographical model of the Gorge giving a greater perspective on the area. Stories of local aboriginal people and the history of white settlement are displayed as well as pictures of plants and animals.

A big day out.
