The Old Geraldton Gaol was established in 1856 and was closed in 1984 when a new facility was opened in nearby Greenough. It is located on Chapmans Road, Geraldton close to the Visitor Information Centre and within the Bill Sewell Complex.
We joined a tour of the Bill Sewell Complex with concluded with a visit to the Old Gaol. Some of the cells in the original part of the gaol were extremely small and the exercise yard did not seem to have much space or any real exercise.
The old gaol is now used as a craft centre and houses a gemstone display as well as locally made arts and crafts. Stalls are set up in cells of the gaol and the sign out the front of the building advertises the location of certain products - eg used clothes see cell 7. It is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm and every second Sunday of the month from 8 am to 12 pm. Very interesting
