The Governor's Cafe is located at the Old Castlemaine Gaol and sits on the hill overlooking the town of Castlemaine. This is a beautiful spot for a great cuppa or meal. Governor's Cafe is open at various times during the week - Monday and Thursday 8 am – 4 pm, Friday and Saturday 8 am – 11 pm as well as Sunday 8 am–5 pm. (They are also open on Public holidays from 8 am-3 pm.)
We went to the Old Castlemaine Gaol for a tour with Christina and then stopped at the Governor's Cafe for coffee and lunch. This cafe is managed by Callum who was most helpful in organising the tour and then greeting us afterwards for lunch. We decided to have a light lunch and try one of their toasty sandwiches. We wanted to leave enough room for one of Callum's homemade treats - I have never seen a bigger piece of Chocolate Brownie which was absolutely delicious.
Governor's Café has outdoor and indoor seating and one of the indoor room has a supply of children’s toys and books, plus a fireplace for comfort during winter. You can even organise a functions in the old mess hall of the gaol – what an interesting place.
