The Mount Isa Underground Hospital and Museum can be found in Joan Street - just behind the Mount Isa Base Hospital. It was tunnelled into the side of a hill to protect patients in case of a bombing raid. These tunnels were apparently constructed in about 14 wees by the mine workers and volunteers after the bombing of Darwin. It is very cool inside the Underground Hospital and during restoration they found a cupboard fully stocked with medicines and equipment from the era.
The volunteers from the Museum will take you on a tour of the Underground Hospital - we found it really interesting to see inside this unusual structure and see what wonderful precautions were taken to look after patients in case of an air raid.
The museum is housed in an old timber building in the hospital grounds - just in front of the Underground Hospital. It is stocked with medical equipment from days gone by and quite interesting to wonder around each room reading about the history of the Mount Isa Hospital - you will appreciate modern medicine when you see some of the things used in olden days. I think it is definitely worth the effort to visit this Museum as well as the Underground Hospital and then you should take look at the Tent House nearby.
