School of the Air is a generic term for correspondence schools catering for the primary and early secondary education of children in remote and outback Australia where some or all classes were traditionally conducted by radio, although this is now being replaced by internet technology. In these areas, the school-age population is too small for a conventional school to be viable.© Wikipedia

The Mount Isa School of the Air is located on Abel-Smith Drive - just off the Barkly Highway in Mount Isa. My husband and I had visited a School of the Air operation in Longreach and wanted to take our daughter along to listen into one of the classes. We were lucky enough to sit in on a lesson with a Kindergarten class and it was great fun learning how the students interact with the teacher and each other over the air.
Mount Isa School of the Air offers lessons up to Year 10 for isolated students in North West Queensland. The area extends from the Gulf of Carpentaria to Birdsville and from Richmond in the East to the Territory in the west. It is a wonderful thing that these children growing up in outback Australia get the opportunity to be educated at home. Make sure you go along and have a look and listen in on a class - donations are gratefully accepted.
