The Tennant Creek Visitor Information centre is co-located with the Battery Hill Mining Centre where you can learn about the extraction of gold from the hard rock using a stamping mill - this was built in the 1930's. These can be found about 1.5 kilometres east of town, a short distance from the Stuart Highway.
It costs $9 to look around the mining museum – one section tells about life on the gold fields around Tennant creek and the other has a small display of gems and rocks in a climate controlled room.
The Visitor Information centre has a range of maps and brochures - of course - and the local staff provided hints on what to see. A short distance along Peko Road is a turnoff to Bill Allen Lookout which allows you to look over the town and surrounding area – unfortunately two big water tanks hinder the view in one direction.
