On the day of our arrival at Kings Canyon Resort in the Watarrka National Park Northern Territory, we quickly set up our caravan so we could enjoy the Kings Canyon Creek Walk before sunset.
To access the Kings Canyon walks drive back along Larapinta Drive from the resort for a short distance and then follow the signs to a large car parking area. This car park can cater for several buses and has a number of covered shelters with seating. This is one of the only places where you can receive mobile telephone and wifi coverage.
The Kings Canyon Creek Walk is relatively easy along a well defined path that follows the edge of the creek. There was very little water left in this creek during our visit in November. At the end of this path you will read a viewing platform looking up towards the wonderful red/orange cliffs of the canyon. This gave us a good perspective of the size of these cliffs before our intended rim walk the following day.
Very good signage showing where walks were going to within the canyon and how they are marked with orange or blue arrows. Before you set off on the walks at Kings Canyon you may notice a very large hat on the fence made from cement – I guess this is to remind visitors to wear one (hat) as the sun is very hot during the day.
