The Battery Hill Mining Centre is co-located with the Tennant Creek Visitor Information Centre. It cost us about $9 to look around the mining museum – one section tells about life on the gold fields around Tennant creek and the other has a small display of gems and rocks in a climate controlled room.
There is a huge stamping mill in the grounds which was built in the 1930's to crush the hard rock and collect the gold. There are a number of pieces of memorabilia collected from the mining days in Tennant Creek and you are able to join an underground mine tour to learn more about the process.
There are public toilets at the information centre and a large covered eating area to escape the heat. It is hard to comprehend the stifling conditions in this part of Australia before air conditioning.
