Ellery Creek Big Hole is a popular spot in the West MacDonnell Ranges about 88 kilometres west of Alice Springs along Larapinta Drive and then turn onto Namatjira Drive (or Red Centre Way).
We called in to look at Ellery Creek Big Hole on a day trip to the West MacDonnell Ranges. This is a permanent water hole and a very welcoming swimming spot on a hot day - it turned out to be over 40 degrees during this late October day in the Northern Territory. Be warned that the water can be very cold in deeper parts. There is a paved pathway all the way from the car park to the sand beside the swimming hole.
There is an emergency phone located just off the main road as you head into Ellery Creek which is very convenient for visitors. Plenty of car parking spaces available and a number of lovely covered picnic tables. Toilets block is located beside the car parking area - great facilities in this lovely National Park.
You are able to camp at this location and it was $5 pp per night and sites are on a first in first served basis. There is an honesty box beside the camp ground where you leave your fee for the night and rangers come around regularly to check campers.
