This is a beautiful golf course set up on the hills overlooking Victor Harbor, Encounter Bay, the Southern Ocean, the Bluff, as well as views of Granite, Seal and Wright Islands We were told by fellow travellers that we should call in and look at the First Hole at the Victor Harbor Golf Club. This hole was rated as the Sunday Mail's number one in the top 18 holes of South Australia, and appears in the Golf Digest's Iconic Holes Hall of Fame. The tee is beside the club house and you hit straight over the top of a steep hill about 30 metres above the fairway. The fairway is lined with trees and has a number of bunkers to be avoided - very challenging.
We stopped to take some photos and Des in the Pro shop was very helpful giving us hints on where to go to get great shots. We walked along in front of the clubhouse to take a photo of the first tee and were greeted by John Gilbert, a member of the club who was doing some work on a balustrade. He saw the rvtrips name on the car and was very interested in what we were doing, so borrowed a golfcart to take us around the course for even better photo opportunities. This was above and beyond what we expected and were grateful for John's time.
The tree lined course is home to a number of native bird and animals with Kangaroos living in the bushes between holes. The Victor Harbor Golf Club is in very good condition and I think you would need good shots along the tree lined fairways in order to score well. They even have a motorised pulley system to help you walk up the hill to the clubhouse after playing the 18th hole.
The name for an Ambrose event was first used by the president of this club and named after an American who moved to the area and introduced a game he called 'shotgun' to Victor Harbor. Ambrose events are now very popular and well known around all Australian golf clubs.
Visitors are welcome at the Golf Club and there is room to park the van outside the gates while you enjoy a game. This is RV friendly with room to turn around while towing your caravan.
