Malanda Falls Visitor Information Centre is located on the Malanda-Atherton Road and has plenty of parking for caravans. This is a lovely building with wide verandahs, which has a great display on the volcanic past of the area and the history of the local Aboriginal people. The Tree Kangaroo Cafe is located next door if you want to pick up some brochures to read while enjoying coffee. We found the staff very helpful.
You can join a guided walk of the adjacent rainforest with the local Ngadjon people and learn about this area, or set off with a map provided by the Visitor Information Centre. We did the Rainforest Walk as well as the Tulip Oak walk (each about one ilometre) - luckily we had umbrellas as it rained the whole time (be warned about some of the spiky bushes along these paths). The Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo is found in this area which is the smaller of Australia’s two tree-kangaroos - if you are lucky you will spot one.
The Malanda Falls are also within easy walking distance of the Visitor Information Centre and we were told to look out for a platypus that is sometimes seen in these waters.
