While travelling in outback Queensland we stopped at Lake Fred Tritton to eat our lunch at one of the shaded picnic tables overlooking the water. Lake Fred Tritton is a recreational lake on the eastern outskirts of Richmond, just off the Flinders Highway between Hughenden and Julia Creek.
This lake was created by the Richmond Shire Council in partnership with the Queensland Government and is used for water sports such as fishing, skiing, canoeing and jet skiing - a range of activities that are not normally offered in rural outback communities. It has shaded playground facilities, a paved walking track (around the perimeter), free barbecues and clean amenities. The lake is stocked with fish including red claw yabbies, barramundi, sooty grunter, sleepy cod, archer fish, forktail catfish and golf grunter.
Along the walking track is a Community Bush Tucker Garden which has a range of beautiful native plants. There is a caravan park located on the edge of the lake which seems to be quite good with some sites overlooking the water. Lake Fred Tritton is relatively easy to find and only a short distance from the Visitor Information Centre.
