Kronosaurus Korner is a visitor information centre and museum in Richmond - between Hughenden and Julia Creek on the Flinders Highway in outback Queensland. We called in to look around while travelling to Mount Isa and would highly recommend that you allow several hours to explore this amazing place. I think the entrey fee to the museum was about $20 each but well worth the money.
Richmond was once covered by an Inland Sea and the area is rich with fossils and skeletal remains of prehistoric animals. One particular skeleton on is about 98% of the dinosaur, displayed in a glass case in a climate controlled room - apparently it is very rare to find this many bones of one animal. Minmi - a small dinosaur was found with some of the skin and protective armour preserved. They think the animal was dehydrated before death and the skin stuck to the bone before being fossilised - therefore the skin did not rot away. These are just two of the many displays that caught my attention.
You can also visit fossil hunting sites on your own and the museum encourages fossickers to bring their discoveries back to Kronosaurus Korner for identification - maps are provided by the Information Centre on where to look. Alternatively you can join a dig or tour with a resident Palaeontologist who will teach you how to find, identify and excavate old fossils. Many of the fossils on display at Kronosaurus Korner were donated by local graziers -discovered while working the land. This is a very impressive collection and housed in a large building - easy to find with the replica Kronosaurus out the front. Kronosaurus Korner is open seven days a week (closed Christmas, Boxing Day, New Years Day and good Friday). Take note of the signs on the public toilet - PreHIStoric and PreHERstoric - a bit of fun. There is plenty of parking available - even when towing a caravan.
