Barcaldine ( locally [bar call din]) is a small town and locality in the Barcaldine Region in Central West Queensland, Australia. Barcaldine played a major role in the Australian labour movement.

We stayed at the Homestead Caravan Park during our visit to Barcaldine. This park is the closest to town and you can easily walk to the Visitor Information Centre.

We walked to the main street to visit the five hotels in town - apparently it is a bit of a challenge to see if you can have a drink at each one - we failed this challenge. We had dinner at the Commercial Hotel - the food was excellent. Exceptional service as they took our order for dinner and wine at the bar and the waitress told us when it was ready to be served in the dining room.

This is a lovely country town and we found all the locals friendly and happy for a chat. Barcaldine houses a monument to the Tree of Knowledge which is located close to the Visitor Information Centre

Streets very wide and the caravan parks look shady. Only small but neat and tidy with easy access. We photographed an interesting seat underneath a tree which was made from terracotta pipes and a railway sleeper. Some people are creative. Staff at information centre very helpful.

Lots of road kill on the side of the road heading into Barcladine and sometimes there are up 50 crows, kites and hawks hanging around for a feed between passing cars. We saw a very large wedge tailed eagle sitting beside the road. A family of emus feeding near the railway track and then we saw our first wild Brolgas. They are grey and have bright red heads.
