Narrabri

Narrabri is a country town in NSW about 100 kilometres from Gunnedah along the Kamilaroi Highway. We spent several days in Narrabri staying at the Big Sky Caravan Park  - a member of Family Parks on Tibberena Street - a large open park with plenty of drive through sites.  

Our first stop the Narrabri Visitor Information Centre which is located on the Newell Highway. Plenty of space to park the van on the road or in the large car park behind the VIC. This is a large new building with display of cotton machinery and a bail of cotton – very dense and is holds enough to make 1200 t-shirts.  

Some of the places we visited:

• baker “Watson’s Kitchen” which has a store front on Maitland Street as well as Tibbereena Street.  
• coffee at Maverick Café 142 Maitland Street lovely enclosed courtyard at the back of the cafe 
• RSL Club for dinner at the Outback Shack Bar and Grill - daily specials and courtesy bus (walking distance to the Big Sky Tourist Park)
• Narrabri Lake - beach access along the foreshore for canoeing or SUPing.  Picnic tables, electric and wood barbeques, walking path and exercise equipment and plenty of parking. 
• CSIRO Australia Telescope Compact Array Visitors Centre is about 20 kilometres from town and along Yarrie Lake Road. This is well worth a visit   
• Sawn Rock in Mount Kaputar National Park.  Head out of town along Killarney Gap Road (Bingara Road). Toilet and picnic tables are provided for visitors near car parking area. The path to the rock face is sealed to a giant rock wall of organ pipes. Amazing formation.
• Glacial Area (about 72 kilometres form Narrabri). Toilets and barbeques are available and you are allowed to camp here. There was plenty of water flowing over the rocks after the rain and the locals told us that this is a popular place to visit for swimming in the rock pools over summer.
• Mount Kaputar National Park about 32 kilometres from Narrabri to the Park and about 52 kilometres to the Mount Kaputar Viewing Platform. 360 degree views over the Nandewar Range and valleys in all directions.  They say you can see 10% of NSW from here. Highly recommended.
