The Swim with the Tuna experience starts at the Boston Harbour Marina where you board a boat for the shot trip to a pontoon and the Tuna holding pen. These pens were created to hold and protect the tuna whilst they grow to market size. The Swim with the Tuna pen has been modified to hold a pontoon which enables safe entry into the water for this unusual experience.
The boat is moored alongside the pontoon and you are supplied with a wetsuit, wetsuit boots, gloves, snorkels and goggles - change rooms and toilets are provided on the boat which is very convenient. If you do not want to get in the water (like me) you can still enjoy the experience by feeding pilchards to the Tuna with a specially modified stick held in the water.
The Tuna are very fast through the water and are quite large fish - some in this pen are 80 kilos. This was a very unique experience - the Tuna are continually being fed around the swimmers - flashing by to catch the pilchards. They are streamlined, beautiful fish and never seem to run into anyone.
There is an underwater viewing platform to watch the staff feed the other fish in the pen - snapper, mullaway, trevally and whiting. You can purchase hot and cold drinks or a sausage sizzle, and you can buy a post card to send from the pontoon.
The Swim with the Tuna Company provide a tour of the harbour on the way back to Boston Marina with a commentary on points of interest - learn about the owners of the fishing trawlers, fishing licences and the cargo ships that pick up grain and rock fertilizer. I would highly recommend this wonderful, unique experience while staying in Port Lincoln.
