As the sign says - Brachina Gorge is a "corridor through time". Apparently this part of the Flinders Ranges has one of the best examples in the world of rock that dates between 640 and 520 million years old. The Gorge has been created through ridges of quartzite and was once used as a pass through which bullock teams pulled their loads. This area is now a popular picnic and camping area.
When visiting the area keep an eye out for the Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies - they were almost hunted out, but are gradually returning to decent numbers. We were lucky enough to see two of these beautiful creatures sitting in the shade near one of the lookouts. The sign does warn you that you may be being watched – and we were. They are very alert to sounds and will watch you carefully - they have stripped tail like a tiger with yellow feet (as the name would suggest). A Geological Trail has been established through this Gorge which interprets the geological history of the area. Interpretive signs are located at significant points along the way informing visitors of the age of some of these rock ridges.
We travelled through Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges on a day trip from Wilpena Pound Campground and thoroughly enjoyed this lovely 4WD adventure - highly recommended.
