Finch Bay is a lovely little beach about two kilometres from the downtown Cooktown - along the same road as the Botanic Gardens and the Natures Powerhouse Visitor Information Centre. There is also a walking track to the beach from the Botanic Gardens.
As with all Far North Queensland beaches the signs are there for potential crocodile risks - I made sure that I had a good look around before venturing onto the sand. This is apparently Cooktown’s swimming beach and best only swim on the northern half as Alligator Creek crosses the centre of the beach with a tidal channel on the southern half - can be deep with strong currents. The beach is narrow at high tide and can be up to 500 metres at low tide. A very pretty spot surrounded by mountains and sand dunes.
