We spent a lovely day sailing on the Derwent Hunter leaving from Abell Point Marina at Airlie Beach. The tour company picked up from our accommodation at Seabreeze Tourist Park and dropped us back at the end of the day. This is an all inclusive tour - morning tea, smorgasbord lunch, afternoon tea, cheese and biscuits, coffee, tea, tap water, snorkelling equipment, stinger suits, Marine Park fees and National Park fees. (Of course you will need to pay for beer, wine (available on the return trip), soft drinks and bottled water).
We went snorkeling at Black Island (Bali Hai) and Langford Island Reef. All the gear was supplied and the staff are on hand to help you in and out of the water - you will see plenty of colourful fish and beautiful coral. We were lucky enough to see a turtle resting in the coral of Langford Island Reef. Of course you are welcome to stay on the boat if not keen to get in the water or you can just take a walk along the sand and enjoy the wonderful scenery in this beautiful part of Australia.
We found the crew really happy and friendly - they really enjoy what they are doing which certainly makes a difference to your day. You can even help with the sails if you would like - the crew will give instruction and no experience is required (just a bit of elbow grease). Remember to take some warm clothing as it is very cold on the return journey - sailing after swimming.
I would highly recommend this great trip sailing in the Whitsunday Islands on the Derwent Hunter.
