Lake Moondara supplies drinking water to Mt Isa and is an easy 30 minute drive from the Isa. Open to most water sports, this large lake has islands and an amazing foreshore, ideal for exploring with your SUP. The lake is a welcome site in, what is otherwise, a very dry and hot environment.
Overnight camping is not allowed, however the gates open at 7 am which is a great time to get onto the water to enjoy the calm conditions and some outback paddling experience.
There are plenty of access points for SUPing, notably from one of the various picnic and bbq areas provided around the lake's foreshore.

Lake Moondara is located near Mount Isa in outback Queensland and is a large body of water - great for boating, fishing, canoeing and of course Stand Up Paddle boarding (SUPing). We were travelling with a Fanatic inflatable SUP board and decided to head out to the lake early one morning for a paddle.
What a great spot to explore as the sun rises over the surrounding hills. The water was very calm at the start of the day and it was just beautiful paddling around enjoying the peace and quiet.
Lake Moondara has a boat ramp, barbeque facilities and lovely picnic areas with large shady trees and grass leading down to the lake for easy access with the SUP.
Lake Moondarra is situated just 20 kilometers north of Mount Isa and access is via a sealed road with a picturesque shoreline drive. It has been stocked with barramundi - permits are not required to fish at Lake Moondarra although catch limits do apply. We might have to invest in a rod holder for the SUP!!
