We stopped at Ayr for some photos during a trip from Townsville to Mackay and liked the feel of this large country town, so decided to stay for a few days at the Burdekin Cascade Caravan Park. This is a Council owned park at the end of the main street and walking distance to shops, cafes, pubs, restaurants and the Visitor Information Centre. Burdekin Cascade Caravan Park can be found next to the local swimming pool - great for a cooling swim after a long day working on one of the local farms. We were lucky enough to have a family of finches nesting in the tree above our site.
Ayr is in the middle of a large sugar cane growing area and can be busy with seasonal workers. The BIG4 Ayr Silver Link Caravan Village has a range of backpacker accommodation and cabins for workers with a bus for transport to and from the farms which also grow mangoes, melons, and a range of other crops.
During our stay we enjoyed morning tea at Dal Santos Deli (very good), lunch at Commercial Hotel on Queen Street (great meal special with steak, chips and salad), pizza at the Burdekin Hotel, exploring the Burdekin Bridge Walk and chatting to some old locals at the Burdekin Visitor Information Centre in Plantation Park.
