Shell businesses in Australia are part of The Shell Group, a global group of energy and petrochemical companies. Our aim is to meet the energy needs of society, in ways that are economically, socially and environmentally viable, now and in the future.
Shell Australia has a record of investing in large projects, including the Clyde Refinery in Western Sydney, the Geelong Refinery in regional Victoria and WA’s Chevron-operated Gorgon LNG Project, which have had a material impact on the development and growth of the Australian economy over the last century. Shell has had a presence in Australia since 1901; supplying oil products to Australians for more than 113 years.
Shell has been in Australia since 1901. Since that time the company has changed to meet a changing Australian market. Today Shell Australia is focused largely in the Upstream sector, especially in the exploration, development and production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and oil. Australia ranks second to the United States as an investment destination for Shell and over the last decade Shell has discovered significant resources in Australia.
Shell is a major investor in key Australian LNG projects, including the world-leading Prelude floating LNG Project, which is 67.5% owned and operated by Shell. Shell also holds significant positions in two of Australia’s biggest resource projects, the North West Shelf LNG project (one sixth interest) and Gorgon, 25% interest). Shell is pursuing further LNG growth options in Australia, including the Browse Joint Venture Development, the Sunrise Joint Venture and Arrow Energy.
