Roebourne is a small town in the North West of Western Australia (WA), between Port Hedland and Karratha (30 kilometres east of Karratha). The Roebourne Visitor Information Centre and Gaol Museum is housed on a beautiful old stone buildings not far from the North West Coastal Highway.
Roebourne was named after Sir John Septimus Roe, the first Surveyor General in Western Australia. Many of the original buildings in this historic town have been restored and tell a story of early pioneering times. The original Gaol was built in 1886 and extended in 1896/97 with local stone quarried from around the area. It later became the Roebourne Visitor Centre and is definitely worth a visit when travelling down the coast.
There are a range of things to see when visiting this part of West Australia and information on tours, accommodation choices and attractions can be found at the Roebourne VIC
