Shelter Bay is located within Edel Land National Park (proposed) as you drive towards Steep Point - the most westerly point of the Australian mainland. The Ranger Station is found just before Shelter Bay and you are required register your visit into the National Park (fees apply if you do not have a West Australian National Park Pass).
Shelter Bay is one of the beautiful camping sites within the park for which you will require a permit - contact the Ranger or fill in a permit application on the website. Sites here are very popular so you are advised to book well in advance.
Shelter bay is found on the leeward side of Edel Land providing protected camping spots close to some lovely small beaches. All campsites have very basic facilities including a limited number of pit toilets - the toilets at Shelter Bay are Eco Toilets which we found to be clean and well maintained. The road to the Shelter Bay campsite is quite sandy and corrugated and I would think you will need a high clearance 4WD. You will need to take all supplies and equipment with you including water and sufficient fuel. At Shelter Bay boats can be launched from the beach providing access to South Passage for fishing and diving.
This is a beautiful spot and I understand the fishing is great.
