The Ranger Station is located within Edel Land National Park (proposed) and access is by high range 4WD only (tyres need to be deflated to 20 psi before entering the Park). Make sure you allow plenty of time to travel along the road to Steep Point as it will take a lot longer than you think by looking at the distance on the map. After the Ranger Station there is Shelter Bay which is a designated camping area with a couple of Eco Toilets - a good place to stop for a wee break. The spots are close to the beach and seem quite sheltered from the winds. These camping sites need to be booked in advance - form information regarding permits email or ring the Ranger.
As you head towards Steep Point from Shelter Bay you make a sharp turn up towards the southwest side of the point and up over some nasty rocks onto more sandy hills. There are a couple of signs along the road that warn of road hazards at particularly bad spots or blind summits. We drove around to The Oven / Faultline first and there were three camps of men who had spent several weeks fishing. To fish off the cliffs they use a helium balloon to carry the bait out into the channel and then it bobs up and down in the water with the wind to help attract the fish. Steep Point is apparently one of the world's best land based game fishing locations.
We then went to Steep Point itself for some photos - you don't want to come all this way and not have something to prove you stood at the most westerly point of the Australian mainland. Make sure you sign the visitors book!
