Breakaway drive is a 70 kilometre round trip from Cooper Pedy and the tourist information centre is happy to provide a map to explore this area on your own or book a tour. These tours are very popular at sunset when the desert seems to change colour with the changing light.
The Breakaways are about 32 kilometres north of town and a so called because the hills look as though they have broken away from the Stuart Range. Great signs from the viewing area give visitors plenty of information on the Aboriginal names of the hills and significance of this area.
This unusual landscape has been used as a film location for several movies and advertisement - Mad Max is one example. Further south you will drive past sections of the dog fence or 'Dingo Fence'. This fence stretches for over 5,300 kilometres across three states. Part of the area along the fence is known as the moon plain which consists of rocks and soft clay as far as the eye can see.
Amazing features and definitely worth the trip - we have never seen anything like it.
