During our stay in Coober Pedy, South Australia we took a drive on the 70 kilometres round trip to view the Breakaways. These are colourful low hills in a desert area that look as though they have broken away from the Stuart Range – thus the name The Breakaways.
There are two lookouts on the map provided by the Visitor Information Centre - these are relatively easy to find. Once at the lookout the views are quite amazing and the desert seems to go on forever into the distance. There are various signs around the car parking area with information on the formation of these Breakaways and explains Aboriginal names of the hills and the significance of this area to their history. Seats are provided to just relax and enjoy the scenery.
I would highly recommend a trip to see this unusual landscape and tours are offered by various companies in town - very popular to visit at sunset and witness the changing colours.
