St George is situated on the Balonne River in Queensland - at the intersection of the Balonne and Carnarvon Highways. Out first stop the VIC to ask about caravan parks and what to see in the area. This is a small town with a wide main street. The VIC is situated off the main road on on the banks of the Balonne River with plenty of parking space.
There are several caravan parks in town and we chose to stay at the Pelican Rest Tourist Park, a member of Top Parks on the Carvarvon Highway – just out of town as you head towards Roma. Lovely large park with lots of open space and flat sites.
A Riverbank Walkway for cycling or walking runs along the banks of the Balonne river and there are toilet blocks, children’s playgrounds and boat ramps along the way.
Unique Emu is a place to visit in town where you can see hand carved Emu Eggs. These are illuminated from inside with LED lamps and are amazing. This is a private collection and it costs $5 to step inside and see the display – preceded by a short video telling the story of the creator. I thought it was worth the money to see these truly unique creations.
Visited the Riversands Wines for a tasting. They grow the grapes here and they are processed at Stanthorpe. Lovely shaded gardens to sit and enjoy cheese platter, scones or meal while having a glass of their lovely wine.
On our last day we called in to the St George Bakery for coffee and a sausage roll – both delicious. This place if very popular with the locals which is always a good sign. Of course there are plenty of things to see and do in St George - a great country town.
