We stopped at Alpha in Queensland - about 170 kilometres west of Emerald along the Capricorn Highway. It was time for lunch and we wanted to have a look at some of the Murals in town. These murals were started by two locals after a devastating flood in 1990 to brighten up the town and lift spirits. Today there are about 24 pained on various buildings around town. The Visitor Information Centre is the perfect place to start.
The Rowley Roberts Tourism Information Centre is housed a small building on Shakespeare Street which, on the day we visited, was staff by a small lady with a huge personality. She was really lovely and happy to point us in the direction of many of the murals. A local with a great deal of knowledge about Alpha and surrounding areas.
Fellow travellers told us about the great pies at the baker next door but unfortunately we had already eaten. I would recommend that you have a look around this quaint country town and remember to check out the mural in the showground – the cat is created using mosaic tiles.
