We drove through Alpha on our journey along the Capricorn Highway from Emerald to Barcaldine in outback Queensland. We stopped to have a look around and send a parcel at the local Post Office. This is a lovely small place with wide streets and famous for the murals painted on buildings around town.
Apparently after a flood caused great damage to the town in 1990, two local artists took it upon themselves to lighten the spirits of the community, by painting a mural on a local workshop. The mural still remains, along with 23 more painted by a variety of local artists. The Rowley Roberts Tourism Information Centre (07 4985 1050) will give you details on the location of these murals as well as other things to do in the area.
The local caravan park was neat and tidy with very flat blocks - we would like to stay here and look around during our next caravan adventure.
