The Glacial Area can be found about 72 kilometres form Narrabri, past Sawn Rock along Killarney Gap Road (Bingara Road). We stopped at Sawn Rock to admire the organ pipes created by lava cooling slowing allowing crystals to align forming long columns. This is Basalt rock formed into 5 sided shapes running down the cliff face -looking like organ pipes
The road sign indicating the Glacial area is directly opposite the road leading to the camping/picnic ground - no warning, so drive slowing as you reach the 70 kilometre distance from Narrabri. Dirt road for a few hundred metres but in good condition. Toilets and barbeques are available and you are allowed to camp here.
There was plenty of water flowing over the rocks after the rain and the locals told us that this is a popular place to visit for swimming in the rock pools over summer. The Glacial Area was a lovely spot to enjoy our picnic lunch in the shade of trees around the parking spaces.
The road to the Glacial Area has quite a number of causeways – flood ways with fast flowing water. Not deep but take caution when crossing. The first one we crossed after leaving Narrabri was full of pot holes – slow down and be cautious.
