Lake Argyle

Description

Lake Argyle is Australia’s largest artificial lake by volume. It is part of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme and is located near the East Kimberley (Western Australia) town of Kununurra. The lake flooded large parts of the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley on the Kimberley Plateau about eighty kilometres inland from the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf, close to the border with the Northern Territory.

Our tour of Lake Argyle began when we were collected from our accommodation for a bus trip to the Lake. First stop was Durack Homestead which was relocated stone by stone from the proposed dam floor, and stored for years before being re-constructed on the edge of the lake. The building is cool during the hot weather with big verandas and thick walls.

A quick look around the Argyle Caravan Park and famous infinity pool before being transported to the lake's edge to board the catamaran. The crew told us about the capacity of the Dam, and how it was constructed - amazing that such a small wall hold back so much water. Hydro power is produced by water flowing through the dam wall which provides most of the electricity to the local area (including Argyle Diamond Mine).

We cruised past many of the islands created when the Lake was filled to capacity. The catamaran anchors in a small cove for lunch and a dip in the Lake (apparently with thousands of fresh water crocodiles - luckily we did not see any). Lunch included barbecued Thread Fin Salmon which had been caught locally -beautiful. Trivia questions from the crew made the return journey lots of fun and great, friendly helpful staff made this a truly enjoyable trip.

Back to the boat ramp and then transferred to the other side of the dam wall to board the speed boat for our trip down the Ord river and back to Kununurra. Stopped several time to look at crocodiles, other animal life and the spectacular scenery that lines the river. A secluded picnic spot is where we stopped for afternoon tea - shaded seating and toilet facilities. Wonderful home made goodies accompanied by tea, coffee or cold water. Very good service, beautiful food and informative local commentary.

Watched a stunning sunset over the diversion dam on Lake Kununurra before boarding a bus and heading back to the caravan park. RvTrips would totally recommend this trip as it was a relaxed, informative and a truly great day out.
