It is quite amazing to be driving along the main road and see great expanses of white - these are salt mines in West Australia. The Dampier Salt mine involves extracting seawater and then using the evaporative power of the sun and the wind to crystallise pure sodium chloride salt in a series of ponds called crystallisers. A renewable energy source - sun and wind.
Apparently the Dampier Salt Mine was created in the 1960's and is the largest producer in the group of three - Dampier, Port Hedland and Lake McLeod. This appears to be a rolling process with various pools containing different levels of water.
