Banrock Station Wine and Wetland Centre is located about 50 kilometres from Renmark in the Riverland Region of South Australia. We left our accommodation in Renmark early one morning to visit Banrock Station in order to explore the boardwalk walking trails before the weather became too hot (it was December after all).
Banrock Station is a 1800 hectare property with a floodplain and wetland lagoon, protected mallee scrub and large vineyard. There are several walks and due to the hot weather we were only able to go on the Boardwalk Experience trail which is about 4.5 kilometres return (this incorporated the Mallee to Valley Trail). The longer Wetland Circuit Walk (8 kilometres) had already closed due to the high temperature forecast for that day.
There are several bird hides built on the edge of the water and we saw a large number of black swans who inhabit this area. One hide is accessed via a long boardwalk over the water through large areas of reeds - this is a lovely spot under large river gums. After we returned to the cafe they closed the walks for the day as the temperature was well into the 30s and it was only about 10:30 am. The Wetlands are well worth the visit.
Banrock station has a lovely cafe restaurant and wine tasting room that overlooks the wetlands and some of vineyards. We enjoyed coffee, with scones, jam (quandong) and cream. Of course we purchased some sparkling Shiraz and Banrock wines as well as other local produce before heading back to Renmark. A very enjoyable experience, highly recommended by the RvTrips team.
Banrock Station Wine and Wetland Centre features wine tastings, lunches board walks and bird life.
