Kalkani Crater is about 16 kilometres drive from the Undara Reception area and there are plenty of car parking spaces, toilets and picnic tables at the base of the crater. The 2.5 kilometre walking track is well sign-posted and will take you up the side of this volcano and around the rim - rated moderate.
We found this walk relatively easy and there are wonderful views over the lava plains from the rim of Kalkani Crater. You will be able to see where these tubes have collapsed and rainforest plants of grown - dark green patches. During our walk we watched the rain come across the plain as it headed in our direction. No option but to put the raincoat on and take shelter - luckily it was just a quick shower. There are interpretive signs all around the rim that explain the geology of the region, and seats are provided at various locations to sit and enjoy the view.
You are asked not to walk into the centre of Kalkani Crater in order to protect the fauna growing at the bottom. We enjoyed the walk around the rim of Kalkani Crater and would recommend this to anyone visiting Undara.
