We drove through Toowoomba during our travels around Queensland. Toowoomba is a large city about 120 kilometres west of Brisbane on the Warrego Highway - situated on the crest of the Great Dividing Range. There is a double lane carriageway almost the entire distance from the Gold Coast and we found travelling easy until the steep climb up the side of the range. This was slow going during our first visit in the rain when towing the caravan. I am sure on a fine day the view would be magnificent.
There are about 150 public parks in Toowoomba, with Jacaranda, camphor laurel and plane trees lining many of the city streets. The city's reputation as 'The Garden City' is highlighted during the Australian Carnival of Flowers festival held in September each year. We were lucky enough to also visit Toowoomba during the 'Carnival of Flowers' and various parks around Toowoomba were alive with beautiful colours and floral decorations. We were able to find a car park with room enough for the van just a short walking distance to the Laurel Park Scented Gardens for a closer look at the displays. One of the displays were shapes of iconic places from around the world represented by flower gardens. A viewing platform was erected beside the gardens to allow a better view of the displays - this was very popular. I highly recommend visiting Toowoomba at this time of the year - the weather is mild and the displays are beautiful.
We discovered that the caravan parks in town were fully booked during the 'Carnival of Flowers' and it is advisable to book well ahead if you wish to stay for a few days. Toowoomba is a busy commercial centre and a large city of about 115,00 people - plenty to see and do.
